Know the House, Then Design the Kitchen

Calabasas is LA County's newest city. It incorporated on April 5, 1991. But its history goes back much further: the Leonis Adobe in Old Town dates to 1844 and is one of the oldest buildings in greater Los Angeles, and Park Moderne, the "Bird Streets" behind Calabasas High School, began as an artists' colony whose cabins and clubhouse remnants still dot streets named Meadow Lark, Bluebird and Hummingbird. Most of the city's roughly 9,400 homes are much newer. The 1980s built a third of them, the 1970s a fifth, and the 1990s and 2000s together another quarter.

Fewer than 4% predate 1960. Six in ten homes are single-family houses, one in ten is a townhouse, and roughly one in six sits in a condo or apartment building of 5 to 19 units. About two-thirds of households own. Calabasas also publishes one of the most detailed kitchen remodel checklists we've seen from any city, and it's the best guide to doing a kitchen here.

We measure, check what the house can support and then show you the new layout in 3D, with a price written out piece by piece.

Preparing the House

Pipes, Wiring and Fresh Air

These are the conditions we plan for in Calabasas before anything is ordered.

  • Fire and the outside of the house. Calabasas lives with fire risk. The Woolsey Fire in 2018 damaged a city park along with homes across the region, and the City publishes its fire hazard severity zone map. Those zones say nothing about cabinets or counters. Where they matter is the shell of the house. On a parcel inside a mapped zone, any window, exterior door or wall vent added during the kitchen job, including the hood's exhaust cap, has to follow the state's wildfire-resistant construction rules.
  • Ventilation. The hood is sized to the cooktop and ducted outside wherever the structure allows, instead of recirculating grease and moisture.
  • Protecting the house. Floors and doorways along the work path are covered, and debris goes out at the end of each day.
Who Issues Your Permit

Calabasas Kitchen Permit Guide

The City's Residential Kitchen Remodel Submittal Checklist is written for non-structural kitchen renovations. It describes a kitchen remodel as work that removes or relocates cabinets, counters, appliances, lighting or drywall, or that changes mechanical, electrical or plumbing systems. That's a broad definition.

WorkUsually needsWhat to know
Painting and swapping hardwareGenerally exemptPurely cosmetic changes seldom require review.
Same layout, new finishesUsually a simple permitThe City of Calabasas confirms the exact category.
More outlets and new light fixturesElectrical permitCode requires dedicated appliance circuits.
Moving the sink, gas line or dishwasherPlumbing permitDrain and vent routes are drawn first.
Wall removal or new openingBuilding permit and plansEngineering if the wall carries load.
  • Most projects beyond simple cosmetic work fall inside it, so plan on a permit.
  • Layouts. Existing and proposed kitchen layouts showing cabinets, appliances, lighting and outlets. MEP applications. Mechanical, electrical and plumbing work is applied for along with the building scope.
  • A Building Project ID. Each application is tied to one project in the City's system.
  • The range hood energy form. A registered 2025-CF1R-ALT-01-E form and HERS verification notes for the kitchen vent hood. That means the hood isn't just a product choice. Its airflow or capture rating has to be documented, and a third-party HERS rater verifies it in the field. We select hoods with published ratings that make verification straightforward, and we schedule the rater.
  • Island and peninsula outlets. Layouts must show countertop and island receptacles per California Electrical Code 210.52(C), and the checklist calls out the size thresholds for islands and peninsulas. A new island usually needs at least one outlet, placed so it's usable and code-compliant. We draw it in, often as a pop-up or a receptacle on the island's end panel.
  • Windows. If windows are part of the remodel, the checklist points to the City's Residential Window Replacement Handout, which covers energy requirements and very high fire hazard severity zone requirements.

For each service: our method, a Calabasas note and a typical price.

Better cabinets, better kitchen

Cabinet Installation in Calabasas, CA

Cabinets are where most of a kitchen budget goes, so they need to be right.

The cabinet plan comes from measurements taken after we check walls and floors for square. Each cabinet is secured to framing and checked for level twice.

Natural materials, such as white oak or walnut cabinets, honed stone-look quartz and wide-plank floors, fit the setting.

Decided up front
  • Check walls for square
  • Set the hardware height

Galley and compact kitchens

Small Kitchen Remodeling in Calabasas, CA

A small kitchen can be fully rebuilt for less than a big one.

We build storage upward with cabinets to the ceiling. We plan a landing spot next to every appliance. Gate access for crews and deliveries has to be arranged in advance. We ask for your association's architectural guidelines and contractor rules at the first visit and build them into the schedule.

Calabasas homes

Many Calabasas neighborhoods are planned developments with homeowners associations, and some are gated. That adds steps. The association may need to approve the work before the City permit is filed, may limit work hours and contractor parking, and may require a deposit for damage to common areas.

Decided up front
  • Size the sink
  • Use every corner
  • Add landing space
  • Confirm venting

What does a galley kitchen remodel cost in Calabasas?

Most small Calabasas kitchens land at

$33,175–$43,612 for the whole remodel.

Premium appliances push it higher.

Layout Planning

Matching the Kitchen to the House

1970s homes. Often a closed kitchen with a peninsula and a separate family room. Opening the wall and adding an island is the usual project.

  • Design notes: Many Calabasas kitchens look out on hills, oaks or canyons. A layout that puts the sink or island facing the view is worth planning for. Both ZIP codes fall in Title 24 climate zone 9, and west-facing glass picks up strong afternoon sun, so low-e glazing on any replaced window, plus an overhang or exterior shade, pays off.
  • What the checklist asks for: Verified Calabasas parcels use the City of Calabasas Building and Safety Division, not LA County.
  • Fire and the outside of the house: We look up your parcel before choosing any of those parts.
  • Kitchens here, by era: The island outlet and hood rules both apply. The common scope is new cabinetry, counters, ventilation and lighting, frequently with the island rebuilt longer and deeper. Large kitchens with modern systems, often in planned communities with homeowners associations.
Cost Guide

What a Calabasas Kitchen Remodel Costs

A whole-kitchen remodel here generally runs $90,500–$170,500.

How much is a complete kitchen remodel in Calabasas?

Most complete remodels with layout changes land at $90,500–$170,500; the final figure depends on cabinets, stone and what we find behind the walls.

Layout-change remodel$90,500–$170,500Installed, whole project

Price ranges by project size

Smallest to largest:

Surfaces and lighting refresh

Counters, backsplash, sink and lighting on the existing cabinets.

$26,500–$48,000
Condo or compact kitchen

Small, galley or unit kitchens done top to bottom. Since the whole room is new, the range can reach past the start of a bigger-kitchen refresh.

$33,175–$43,612
Everything replaced, plan unchanged

A complete update that keeps the work centers where they are.

$48,000–$90,500
Wall opened, island added

Layout changes with new plumbing and wiring.

$90,500–$170,500
Premium, structural or large custom

Bearing walls, custom millwork or top-tier appliances.

$160,000–$267,000

Individual service prices assume a standalone job. Done together, much of the setup is shared.

The checklist's requirements, including the hood form, HERS verification, MEP applications and drawn layouts, add some design and inspection cost compared with cities that need less documentation. Houses from the 1980s on tend to sit in the lower half of each range, since their wiring and plumbing rarely need replacing.
