In the 1920s Portuguese dairymen came from the San Joaquin Valley, Dutch families followed, and the Artesia Dairyland Fair ran for a decade from 1953. Today Artesia is compact, about 4,700 homes almost entirely surrounded by Cerritos. Nearly half were built in the 1950s and 1960s, and more than a third before 1960.
